Clinicians Thriving: Meet Denise

Let’s meet another clinician who is thriving! What’s something Denise does that you can add to your own wellness journey? For me, getting enough sleep can be a challenge. But I’m working on it. One day at a time – right?

Name:  Denise
Nursing specialty: Intensive Care, Clinical Education, System Analyst
Practices in: Illinois
Years in nursing: 38

  • What’s one wellness ritual you’ll never quit?
Making sure I get enough sleep! When I started working 12-hour night shifts in the ICU, I finally understood the importance of sleep to perform my best and respond effectively in critical situations. I also rarely worked more than two shifts in a row because I needed the time to recover physically, mentally, and emotionally.

  • Name one food you could eat every single day.
Chocolate! I have learned, however, to enjoy it in moderation rather than deprive myself completely. I don’t keep chocolate in the house, so I don’t go overboard.

  • How do you create calm in the chaos of everyday life?
I recently started a gratitude journal. Every day I write about at least one thing that happened that I am grateful for. Reflecting on even little things has helped me find the good every day and not be overwhelmed by the negativity in the world. I wish I had started it years ago.

  • What’s the best career advice you were ever given?
Don’t be afraid to try new things! Nursing offers so many different opportunities. I have worked as a nurse at the bedside in a Med/Surg unit, Telemetry, and ICU. I’ve been a staff educator. I’m currently working on the IT side of the healthcare profession as an analyst with a popular electronic medical record system. Taking on different roles has kept me challenged, motivated, and engaged!

  • What’s one thing you would tell your younger self?
You can do more than you believe you can. That’s also the advice I’d give to anyone starting a career in healthcare. Believe in yourself! You are more capable than you realize.
