Clinicians Thriving: Meet Rastisha

Let’s discover how another clinician is thriving, this time in the chaotic world of the ER. What do you think of Rastisha’s advice about setting boundaries? I believe this is one of the hardest things we as healthcare professionals need to learn to do, but it’s absolutely essential for our long-term well-being.

Name: Rastisha
Nursing specialty: Registered Nurse, ER
Practices in: Florida
Years in nursing: 11 years

  • What’s one wellness ritual you’ll never quit?
Prioritizing self-care. I try to do something to “fill my cup” every single day. I apply face masks, take bubble baths, and soak my feet often.

  • Name one food you could eat every single day.
I absolutely love fries and would eat them every day if I could. When I treat myself, my favorite fries are the ones I make at home in the air fryer and season with lemon, garlic, and herbs. Yum!

  • How do you create calm in the chaos of everyday life?
My prayer life is very important to me. I start my day with a prayer to ground myself. I also have a fantastic community of friends and a supportive husband that help me balance my busy life. A supportive community, prayer life, and meaningful relationships help calm the chaos.

  • What’s the best career advice you were ever given?
A preceptor once told me to always remain flexible and open to change. The healthcare system is ever-changing, so adjusting to change has been essential. Adaptability is a skill that takes some practice, so I would pay this advice forward by saying self-kindness and mindfulness go a long way toward being open to change.

  • What’s one thing you would tell your younger self?
Learn how to care for yourself first. I have given nursing many years of my life and would put the needs of the unit before mine, which led me to experience burnout and compassion fatigue. In the past few years, I have learned to prioritize myself, establish boundaries, and say no. You can’t fully care for others unless you take care of yourself.
